Walk-Behind Spreaders

Do-Cut Sales & Service is your one stop shop when it comes to purchasing a walk-behind spreader for your yard.  We carry top walk-behind spreader brands, Prizelawn and Spyker at great prices.

A walk-behind spreader has a hopper that holds anywhere from 20 to 100 pounds of product.  There are also application settings to control the flow rate of the product being applied. These settings vary based on the product running through your spreader.  Walk behind spreaders can be used to apply grass seed, fertilizer, herbicide, pesticides, fungicides, and even ice melter, etc.

There are two types of walk-behind spreaders; drop spreaders and broadcast spreaders.

Drop Spreaders

  • A drop type, walk-behind spreader usually has a plastic hopper with solid wheels, and an approximately 25-pound capacity.
  • Drop type walk-behind spreaders are very accurate when applying product.  When using a drop type walk-behind spreader you should overlap the wheel tracks to be sure no areas are missed when applying seed or chemicals, thus avoiding stripes in missed application areas.
  • Most drop type walk-behind spreaders have plastic hoppers that are lighter to push and easy to clean.
  • These spreaders are best for smaller areas - 10,000 square feet or less.

Broadcast Spreaders

  • A broadcast walk-behind spreader also has a plastic hopper, with a capacity from 25 to 100 pounds.
  • This type of walk-behind spreader usually has semi-pneumatic or pneumatic tires, making it easier to push when the hopper is full of product.
  • A broadcast walk-behind spreader broadcasts the applied product out of the hopper where there is a gate, or opening. This opening can be controlled by a cable and lever located on the handle of the spreader.
  • It is very important to overlap areas when using a broadcast walk-behind spreader, as the applied product is dispensed less at the outer edges of the broadcast pattern.
  • Most of the fertilizer, or product will fall within the first three-quarters of the broadcast diameter.  A broadcast walk-behind spreader is more forgiving than a drop type.  The application process for a broadcast walk-behind spreader doesn’t have to be as precise to achieve great results.  Typically, no streaking or striping occurs when using a broadcast walk-behind spreader to apply fertilizer.
  • Most residential, and light duty commercial broadcast walk- behind spreaders have metal frames.  The best broadcast walk-behind spreader has a stainless-steel frame, making it much more durable when applying different products, like chemicals and ice melting/ice control products.
  • A broadcast walk-behind spreader usually comes with a hopper cover which is very important to use when applying ice melting products.  The hopper cover will prevent the product from getting wet and clumping, thus eliminating clogging.
  • Another great option for a broadcast walk-behind spreader is a side deflector.  A deflector is important when applying grass seed, chemicals, or ice melter. as the deflector prevents throwing product into areas that do not need to be treated or may be damaged.
  • After using either type of walk behind spreader, you should always clean it thoroughly and let it dry out in the sunshine to avoid any type of cross contamination when using the walk behind spreader to apply different products.  Certain products can cause the metal to deteriorate so it is critical to clean your walk behind spreader after each use.

General Information About Walk-Behind Spreaders

  • There are dedicated walk-behind spreaders for ice melt/ rock salt applications.  These walk-behind spreaders are high volume output to accommodate the larger product size dispersed through the gate/opening of the spreader.  This type of walk-behind spreader is also best to purchase with a stainless-steel frame for longevity.
  • The gate, or opening on a walk-behind spreader must be adjusted based on the type of  product being applied.
  • Most products have setting recommendations on the bag, so please read the instructions carefully and adjust the gate accordingly before applying product.
  • Ground speed is also a factor when using a walk behind spreader.  The faster you walk the more product will be dispersed.  You’ll have to calibrate the spreader correctly to deliver the correct amount of granular fertilizer and pesticides to the turf.  If calibration is not done, you can apply too much fertilizer or pesticide and “burn” the turf.

There is a big difference between drop and broadcast spreaders and how they are properly calibrated.  With a drop spreader, you have to be careful not to drop a large amount of product as soon as you open the gate.  Begin on a solid surface and then ease onto the turf.
