Residential Trimmer Overview
- Residential trimmers are available with a curved shaft or straight shaft.
- Curved shaft trimmers are meant for light-duty homeowner trimming.
- Straight shaft residential trimmers can handle a little more work, and have a longer trimmer shaft for reaching under fence lines, into ditches and other hard to reach areas.
- Residential trimmers can also be used for after mowing for trimming around landscaping, sidewalks, driveways, patios, etc.
- Typically, residential trimmers can take line sizes of .050 to .080.
- Trimmer line can be purchased in bulk to rewind the spool yourself, or can be purchased pre-wound on a spool. This spool can pop back in the trimmer line head. Other residential trimmer heads with pre-cut lengths of line that pop into the grommets on a trimmer are available as an option for some models.
- A residential trimmer can sometimes be used as an edger. Simply turn the trimmer on its side, and use the line to create an edge. It will do a great job around your driveway, sidewalks, and patios.
- Some residential lawn trimmers can take different cutting heads, such as poly fingers, or a metal grass blade. Keep in mind when adapting any residential trimmer with a different style cutting head, additional pieces may be required for safe operation. We’ll be sure to explain exactly what you need!
- Rigid cutting heads will not bend, so be extra careful when using a rigid head trimmer up against any solid object like a tree, building, landscape timbers or edging. Be sure to always use a trimmer line because trimmer line is flexible and will bend when up against an object.
- Most residential trimmers come with a “loop” handle. One hand goes on the trimmer shaft grip and the other hand is placed on the “loop” handle. Some lawn trimmers have a “bicycle” handle. The trimmer tucks under your upper arm then each hand grips the “bicycle” handle. Optional shoulder straps can be added to most trimmers to allow for easier operation and control.
- Gasoline trimmers used a gas/oil ratio of 50:1. That’s 2.6 ounces of two-cycle engine oil per one gallon of gas. It is very important to use ethanol free gasoline in all outdoor power equipment. Always be sure to use the proper oil at the correct ratio for the best performance of your lawn equipment.
- Never leave the gasoline in your trimmer over a long period of time. This will cause internal carburetor problems with the engine of your trimmer. If you are consuming the gas regularly, that is perfectly fine, but once fall hits and you are not using your trimmer as much, don’t fill the tank unless you know you’re going to use it. Also, do not use old gasoline in your trimmer engine or the same problems will arise.
- Pre-packaged ethanol-free mixed 50:1 fuel is available. This is ideal for the trimmer engine. This fuel has a two-year shelf life from when it is open, and has proven to be very reliable. This can eliminate the worry about mixing fuel correctly, or how old the fuel is in your gas can. Pre-packaged ethanol-free gas also reduces carbon build-up on the internal parts of your trimmer engine. Consider using the pre-packaged fuel if you have a weekend retreat, and keep equipment gassed up and ready to go. This fuel is perfect for that situation!
- Battery-powered residential trimmers are also available and vary in size and weight. Different trimmers have different size batteries, and the weight of the trimmer is directly affected by the battery size. When purchasing battery powered equipment, keep in mind to stay within the same brand when you purchase more products, this way you will have extra batteries and chargers. Be sure to check this before making additional battery powered product purchases.
- Corded-electric residential trimmers are also available. When using and electric trimmer, be very careful not to accidentally cut the power cord!
- Always wear the proper protective apparel when using a grass trimmer;
- Eye protection
- Hearing protection
- Long pants or chaps
- Closed toe shoes.
- Some trimmers are available with attachments. These trimmers are very versatile because you have just one power head that fits multiple attachments. These units are available in gasoline and battery powered. Available attachments are as follows: (note, not all attachments are available for all brands of residential trimmers)
- Edger attachment
- Blower attachment
- Pole Pruner attachment
- Hedge Trimmer attachment
- Stihl manufactures their own trimmer line for use in their residential trimmers. Stihl trimmer line is treated to resist friction and heat build-up in the trimmer head. Be careful to avoid real cheap trimmer line. If you use cheap line in a trimmer head that creates a lot of friction and heat, it can melt together leaving you with a ball of plastic inside the head.
