What is a Brush Mower or Brushcutter and Who Can Benefit from Having One?
- Brush mowers or brushcutters can be thought of as two different pieces of equipment. Some brushcutters are hand held and look like a commercial trimmer, but they have a heavy-duty rigid metal cutting blade to handle tough weeds, vines, etc.
Brush mowers are walk behind units that are self-propelled and have a robust cutting deck with a flail blade design (sometimes). Flail blades are usually thicker than a lawn mower blade and are made to bounce off of any obstacle they would hit without damaging the spindle or spindle shaft of the brush mower deck. This type of brush mower is about 24 to 36 inches wide and can handle cutting heavy underbrush, saplings, high, heavy weeds, etc.
Sharpening these thicker blades requires a regular blade grinder, not a fast grind blade grinder, since you need to be able to maneuver the blade differently to sharpen the brush mower blade correctly. - Brush mowers and brushcutters basically perform the same job – it just depends how big that job is.
- Use a brush mower to cut paths in nature for easy, safe access to acreage. Access to tree lines, power lines, nature trails for horseback riding, dirt bikes, four-wheelers, or other recreational vehicles.
- The average cutting height of a brush mower deck is between 3 and 4 inches. The brush mower deck also has a heavy-duty trailing shield – sometimes made of chain links to assist in controlling the debris after it is cut. The brush mower typically has a guard on the front to help break down the debris as it approached it.
- Use a brushcutter to trim in hard-to-reach spaces like a ditch, and around ponds or lakes. If using a brushcutter in a wide-open area without obstacles such as trees, landscape timbers, landscape edging or structures, change out the trimmer line and put a rigid cutting head on the brushcutter. Doing so will not use up line which can cause you to stop to add more line. Using a rigid cutting head will save time!
- Hand-held heavy-duty brushcutters usually have a bicycle handle. This handle provides protection and stability when in use. This type of brushcutter comes with a larger guard by the cutting head.
- Hand-held brushcutters can take different cutting heads as follows:
- PolyCut Mowing Head – Cutting tool for light vegetation working in large, unobstructed areas with pivoting thermoplastic blades.
- Grass Cutting Blade – Reversible steel quadruple blade for heavy vegetation.
- Grass Cutting Blade – Steel blade with eight teeth for mowing thick, dry grass and reeds
- Brush Knife – Steel triple blade for trimming and removing tough, tangled grass, scrub and thorny bushes.
- Circular Saw Blade Scratcher Tooth – Special steel for mid-range professional trimmers and upward for cutting gnarled bushes and thin tree trunks.
- Chisel Tooth Circular Saw Blade – Special steel for mid-range professional trimmers and upward for cutting gnarled bushes and thin tree trunks. This blade can be sharpened when necessary.
- Be sure to always wear protective apparel when using a brush mower or brushcutter:
- Helmet and face shield
- Eye protection
- Hearing protection
- Long pants and or protective chaps
- Long sleeved shirt or arm chaps
- Close toe shoes or heavy steel-toed boots
- You can never be too careful when operating heavy equipment like a brush mower or brushcutter. Be sure no one is standing near the brushcutter as debris can be easily thrown off the blade and accidentally break a window or injure someone – your work area should be free of people. Same with a brush mower – even though the brush mower deck does not discharge, anything could happen. Safety first, always.
