Commercial Lawn Trimmer Overview:

  • Commercial trimmers are just that – commercial trimmers!  They are meant to be run and used daily.
  • Commercial trimmers have a straight trimmer shaft.  Internally, some have a cable that runs the head, but the best trimmers have an internal solid shaft that runs the trimmer head.  Trimmers with this solid shaft can take heavier cutting heads.
  • All professional grass trimmers come with a shoulder strap for additional comfort and control when in use.  Optional shoulder harnesses are available for your grass trimmer too.  Single deluxe, double standard, forestry double shoulder and advanced tree harnesses.
  • Be sure to wear the proper protective apparel when operating a commercial lawn trimmer:
    • Eye protection
    • Face shield
    • Hearing protection
    • Long pants and/or protective chaps
    • Closed toe shoes
  • Most commercial trimmers have a “bicycle” handle with throttle controls on the handle.  Some grass trimmers have a “loop” handle, but most landscape professionals prefer the “bicycle” style handle.  These handles rotate for easy wall hanging or transportation when placing your trimmer on a trimmer rack on or in a landscape trailer.
  • Bicycle handle commercial trimmers come with a larger guard covering the trimmer line head.  The bicycle handle also serves as a guard and protects the operator against any kickback when using rigid cutting heads.  It is designed so the handle will hit the operator before the cutting head can cause injury.
  • Loop handle trimmers come with a smaller guard covering the trimmer line head.  If you prefer to use different rigid cutting heads, a barrier bar and larger guard must be installed for safe operation and to reduce the risk of injury.
  • Many Stihl professional trimmers have Stihl’s 4-Mix engine.  This engine still uses a 50:1 gas/oil mix, but has the internal structure and workings of a 4-cycle engine.  This engine has proven to be very reliable in Stihl’s professional trimmer line-up, has lower emissions and is a very fuel-efficient too!
  • Professional grass trimmers come with a dual-line head with .095 line.  Optional cutting heads are as follows for Stihl professional trimmers:
    • PolyCut Mowing Head – Cutting tool for light vegetation working in large, unobstructed areas with pivoting thermoplastic blades.
    • Grass Cutting Blade – Reversible steel quadruple blade for heavy vegetation.
    • Grass Cutting Blade – Steel blade with eight teeth for mowing thick, dry grass and reeds
    • Brush Knife – Steel triple blade for trimming and removing tough, tangled grass, scrub and thorny bushes.
    • Circular Saw Blade Scratcher Tooth – Special steel for mid-range professional trimmers and upward for cutting gnarled bushes and thin tree trunks.
    • Chisel Tooth Circular Saw Blade – Special steel for mid-range professional trimmers and upward for cutting gnarled bushes and thin tree trunks.  This blade can be sharpened when necessary.
  • If you use a professional trimmer in a wide-open area without obstacles such as trees, fence lines, landscape timbers, landscape edging or structures you can save line by using a polycut head or grass blade.  No need to stop to add more line if you run out.
  • DO NOT use aftermarket trimmer heads on professional trimmers.  Use the heads made by the trimmer manufacturer for the best performance and results.
  • It is best to store bulk trimmer line for your commercial trimmer out of the sunlight, and always start the season with fresh trimmer line.  There’s a lot of friction and heat build-up in a professional trimmer line head.  This is why Stihl makes their own trimmer line and treats it to avoid “melting” and sticking together inside the head.  Professional trimmer line is available as follows:
    • Bulk spools:
      • .095 round, and twisted line
      • .095 to .155 round line
      • .095 to .130 square line
      • .095, .105 and .130 CF3 Pro twisted line
      • ;Pre-wound spools are available with .095 line that just pop back into the trimmer head
    • Pre-Cut pieces for use with Stihl’s Duro-Cut heads
      • .095, .120, .130 and .155
  • Some professional trimmers have attachment options.  Stihl’s professional trimmer Kombi line-up is second to none.  Talk about versatility!  One professional powerhead to maintain, and so many tool options.  Three different size professional powerheads with optional attachments as follows:
    • Curved Shaft Trimmer
    • Brushcutter with 4 tooth grass blade
    • Blower
    • Pole Pruner (10” and 12” bar sizes available)
    • Shaft Extension 37” available in carbon-fiber, extremely light weight only weighs 2 lbs.  Also available in heavier model weighs about 5 lbs.
    • Curved Lawn Edger – features adjustable depth control wheel for edging along walkways and landscaping.
    • Straight Lawn Edger – has an open deflector design for cleaning up edges with more power.
    • Cultivator – Ideal for flower bed rejuvenation and mixing amendments into soil.
    • Straight Hedge Trimmer (fixed angle)
    • Adjustable Power Scythe with 145 degree working range
    • Reciprocator (reduces risk of thrown objects – best used in high traffic areas, around golf course bunkers, ponds, lakes and ditch banks)
    • Articulating Hedge Trimmer (20” and 24” lengths available)
    • BedEdger (this works best with the two larger powerheads)
    • Power Sweep – Heavy duty rubber flaps clean up caked-on dirt on concrete, move pebbles from sand and turf, and removes water and light snow from hard, flat surfaces.
    • Bristle Brush – Wide sweeping surface makes quick work of big sweeping jobs.
  • Battery powered commercial trimmers have larger batteries with longer run times.  Some even have batteries that are worn on a belt.
