Benefits of a Zero-Turn Mower
- Do-Cut Sales & Service sells zero-turn mowers for small residential use starting at 34”, HOA zero-turn mowers (Homeowner with Acreage) and large commercial ZTR mowers with cutting decks up to 144”. Let a Do-Cut Professional help you select the right one!
- Zero-turn mower decks have stamped steel decks (usually a thinner gauge of steel), or welded-fabricated decks with 7-10 gauge steel. This is heavy- duty and more durable for a rougher residential yard, or for commercial use.
- Zero-turn mower engine sizes range from residential 15.5HP all the way to commercial size ZTR lawn mowers with 44HP diesel.
- A zero-turn mower is maneuvered with “sticks”. When you want to turn right, you push forward with your left hand, and when you want your mower to turn left, you push with your right hand. Same procedure for putting your zero-turn mower in reverse. Simply pull the stick toward you and literally, your mower will turn on a dime!
- Maneuverability is second to none with a zero-turn mower. You can trim around landscaping features in your yard with ease!
- Mowing time is typically reduced by 50% when using a zero-turn mower vs. a lawn tractor. This is because the blade tip speed on a ztr is faster than the blade tip speed on a lawn tractor. Therefore, the ground speed of a zero-turn mower is faster than a lawn tractor.
- When you mow with a zero-turn mower, your line of sight is not obstructed by the hood of a tractor. You are seated, hands on the sticks, and nothing is in front of you – just your feet!
- There is an optional handle that can be installed on some zero-turn mowers if you need assistance stepping up onto your mower.
- Cleaning beneath the deck of a zero-turn mower can be a little tricky. Some zero-turn mowers have an adapter for a jack to fit into, to raise the front of the mower off of the ground. This creates easy access to beneath the mower deck.
- When cleaning under a zero-turn mower, please be sure the unit is secure, and you wear proper eye protection, gloves and other safety apparel.
- Some zero-turn mowers have a washout port on the mowing deck. If you use this port, hook your garden hose to the port on the mower deck. Turn on the water and then turn on your ZTR mower and engage the blades – this will blow out the grass from under your mower deck.
- Cleaning beneath the mower can be very messy, so it’s best not to clean the mower on your driveway… do so on the grass. When finished, disconnect the garden hose and start your mower and blades. This will help blow excess water from beneath the mower deck.
- Typically, a zero-turn mower has a very comfortable seat. Some zero-turn mowers have a spring suspended operator pod that literally floats over the mower chassis. The suspension of the pod is adjusted based on the weight of the operator. This feature is available on both residential and commercial ZTR lawn mowers.
- Yes, there is a cup holder on your zero-turn mower too! Some are even equipped with USB charging ports as well.
- A residential zero-turn mower has a seat, but the operator stands on some commercial ZTR mowers. The stand-on platform on a commercial zero-turn has ample suspension. This makes it easier on your knees, and it is controlled similarly to a sit down zero-turn mower – the “sticks” are just smaller and controlled with your fingers.
- Large commercial zero-turn mowers also have ROPS (Roll Over Protection System). Operating a zero-turn mower on any type of slope can be dangerous. If you have a yard with a large hill or slope, ask a Do-Cut Pro for their advice on this topic. We can get the ‘safe grade of operation’ direct from the manufacturer for the mower you are interested in. Always keep the ROPS up and locked for safety while using your mower.
- You can place a mulch kit or a bagger on a zero-turn mower too. Keep in mind that sometimes a fan assist is required for bagging on mowers with a larger cutting deck.
- Typically, these bags go onto the rear of a zero-turn mower, but a stand-on mower bag is parallel on the side of the mower. If you put a bagger on a zero-turn mower, the kit may come with weights that go on the front caster wheels and act as ballast to offset the increased weight in the rear of the mower as the bag gets full. These weights are small, but are made of cast iron and are very heavy. Residential zero-turn mower bags are typically 6-bushel, some larger commercial zero-turn mower bags are 9-bushel.
- Do-Cut even has battery-powered zero-turn mowers. That’s right, no gas, oil or belts. A small residential zero-turn mower can mow up to 2 acres on a charge, while a large commercial ZTR mower can run 7-9 hours on a charge. This is ideal for a landscape contractor – no charging in the middle of the day. This type of commercial mower is ideal when noise is a factor, such as around a college campus, near office buildings, resorts, etc. This commercial zero-turn mower is very quiet.
