    1. How large is your yard?
    2. Is your yard flat or is there an incline?  If an incline, how steep?
    3. Do you have a lot of obstacles like trees, flower beds, swing sets, trampolines, etc.?
    4. Do you have limited storage?
    5. Do you have to fit the mower through a gate or small shed door?
    6. Who is primarily responsible for using the mower?
    7. Do you have any limitations that would require special features on mowing equipment?

Reel Lawn Mowers

Most mowing equipment sold today have some type of motor; battery, electric or gasoline.  Reel mowers are from days gone by, and no one wants a manual lawn mower when rotary powered mowing equipment is available.  Reel lawn mowers have two to six blades and use a scissor-like action of a cylinder of rotating blades to cut the grass.  Reel mowers are very quiet, create less pollution and can cut grass much shorter than rotary mowers, but their blades are very difficult to sharpen and maintain.  Reel mowers are commonly used on golf course greens.

Rotary Lawn Mowers

Rotary mowers use a horizontal rotating blade or blades, The number of blades is dependent on the size of the deck on the lawn mower. A fan-like action is created when a rotary mower is used. This action creates a vacuum which sucks up the grass into the path of the rotating blade where it is cut.  Rotary mowers are the most common type of mowing equipment used today, and these mowers are available in sizes from 20 inches up to 144 inches plus.

Walk Behind Lawn Mowers

Walk behind mowers are commonly used by homeowners.  This type of lawn mower can usually bag, mulch or discharge the grass clippings once they are cut.  There are many other features available on walk behind mowers such as push or self-propelled.  Push mowers are moved forward by the operator, self-propelled lawn mowers are moved forward by a transmission, thus eliminating the need for the operator to observe the weight of the mower and the contents of the bag when in use.  Self-propelled mowing equipment is a must, especially when bagging.  Gasoline powered, walk behind lawn mowers are available with pull or recoil start engines, or an electric start.  An electric start engine is a key feature if you’ve had issues with pull starting the engine on a mower.  There is a small battery on an electric start mower that makes it a breeze to start!  Most walk-behind lawn mowers have two or four-wheel adjustments. One on each wheel, or one adjustment for the front wheels and one adjustment for the rear wheels.

Riding Lawn Mowers

Riding mowers encompasses tractors and zero-turn mowers.  Today’s ride-on mowing equipment is gasoline or battery powered, and most gasoline riding mowers start with a key or push button.  When choosing a riding mower it is critical to assess your yard and the ability of whomever is operating the riding mower.

Lawn Tractors

Lawn tractors range in deck sizes from 30 inches up to 60 inches or more.  Driving a lawn tractor is very similar to driving a car.  You have a forward gas pedal and a reverse gas pedal, as well as a parking brake.  Most tractors have accessories such as baggers, mulch kits, and some can even tow a yard cart.  You have to be very careful when operating any lawn tractor on a hill or incline.

Zero Turn Lawn Mowers

Zero turn mowers are available in cuts from 30 inches up to 144 inches or more on some large commercial machines.  Zero turn mowers are controlled by “sticks” or “arms”, and offer excellent maneuverability.  They can turn on basically a zero radius.  Zero turn mowers can travel at faster ground speeds than lawn tractors because the deck has a different placement, and the blade tip speed is faster.  Forward and reverse on zero turn mowers is all controlled by your hand movements.  Zero turn mower accessories include baggers, mulch kits, towing ability, and much more, specific to the mower brand.
Zero turn lawn mowers are not meant to mow on steep hills or inclines.  There are certain incline degree limitations for zero turn mowers. Please be sure to understand these limitations, and assess your yard before purchasing or using a zero turn on a hill or incline.

When making any major purchase for your home, especially lawn mowers, it is important to purchase from an authorized dealer.  Mowing equipment is machinery - it will break at some point, and need replacement parts and service.  By purchasing your lawn mower from an authorized dealer, you gain peace of mind knowing if your mower needs repair, a certified dealer has the ability to order repair parts and usually has factory-trained, authorized mechanics to perform the job.

Large Home Centers Do Not Have the Knowledge or Expertise

Large home centers and mass merchants do not sell lawn mower parts. They have very little, to no knowledge of parts, or how to repair the equipment! So save yourself a lot of grief and aggravation by buying your next lawn mower or lawn tractor from an authorized dealer.

There are many good quality brands of lawn mowers, but the brand is only as good as where you purchase it.  An authorized dealer will stand behind their product and keep your mower in tip top shape, so you become a long-term happy customer!

Do-Cut Sales & Service carries brands like Toro, Husqvarna, Stihl, Ego and Honda.
